Postillion Hotels sharply increases internship fee

Hotel chain invests in future hospitality professionals

From January 2024, Postillion Hotels will increase the internship fee to 850 euros per month. This amount applies, for a full-time internship, to both MBO and HBO students and is 500 euros above the minimum compensation set out in the new hospitality industry collective labour agreement. With this increase, Postillion Hotels wants to meet students' increased costs. In addition, Postillion Hotels helps students who choose a career with the hotel chain after their internship period to pay off their study debt up to 5,000 euros net per year.

Life has become considerably more expensive for students in recent years: both the cost of living and tuition fees have increased. Students doing internships in the hospitality sector often face irregular working hours, making an easily accessible internship site from home a necessity. By significantly increasing the internship allowance, from a maximum of €600 per month to a standard €850 per month (an increase of at least 30%), Postillion Hotels aims to make it more accessible for students to choose the internship placement that suits them best, regardless of location.

Erik-Jan Ginjaar, general manager Postillion Hotels: "We see this substantial increase in the internship fee as a necessary token of appreciation towards students, who are an important part of our teams. Not only do we need sincere attention for our guests, but also for (future) employees - without them, we obviously cannot fulfil our promises to guests. In doing so, the raise helps us return to the core: an internship period should be about professional and personal development. This is compromised when students are under too much pressure. We hope to ease the financial burden slightly with this increase in the internship fee so that our trainees can focus on their future."

Repaying study debt

A large proportion of Postillion Hotels' staff are 'home-grown' and have grown on the shop floor. This growth is partly made possible by a working climate where employees have the space to focus on their ambitions. This is done not only by letting them take control of their own work as much as possible, but also by reducing some concerns. For instance, Postillion Hotels has been helping permanent employees pay off their student debt since 2022. On top of the regular salary, 2.50 euros net per hour is paid off study debt. This amount is transferred directly to DUO and can add up to 5,000 euros net per year in full-time employment.
