This question was asked by Hotelschool The Hague on the occasion of its 95th anniversary, inviting industry professionals, students, staff and alumni to compile a list of their favourite HICON.
A good reason for Hotelschool The Hague to unveil the HICONS - a prestigious list of the 95 most influential individuals, buildings and objects in hospitality, setting new standards and inspiring students worldwide. Nominations were made by a jury consisting of hospitality industry professionals, entrepreneurs and alumni, with more than 3,000 votes determining the final list.

Besides announcing the list of HICONS, Hotelschool The Hague also presented four special awards to highlight their contribution to the hospitality industry.
The highest honour was awarded to Abdelhamid Idrissi, founder of the Stichting Studiezalen en Fris Supermarkt in Amsterdam - the world's first free supermarket. Idrissi's innovative model offers groceries for free, with visitors instead of paying committing to coaching sessions that help them work towards a better future. By combining essential support with personal growth, Idrissi's vision creates dignified, community-driven support that goes beyond traditional charity. This award celebrates Idrissi's commitment where care, respect and opportunity are the foundations of hospitality.
"We are immensely proud of this winner. Abdelhamid's dedication to service and hospitality is truly admirable and a true example for our students," said Regine von Stieglitz, chair of the Board of Governors. "He has redefined what it means to give something back to the community through hospitality."
