Three in five hospitality workers consider resigning

  • 60% of hospitality workers think about leaving their current job
  • The top three reasons for a job change: desire for a higher salary (47%), feeling that their employer does not value their work (30%) and no advancement opportunities (29%).
  • In the 18 - 24 age group, 64% are considering a career switch, compared to 33% in the 54+ age group

Recent research shows that 60 per cent of hospitality workers are considering changing jobs or quitting their current jobs. This research was conducted in April 2024 by Quinyx, a forerunner in AI-driven workforce management software. The percentage has more than tripled from last year, when 18 per cent of hospitality workers were still considering quitting their jobs.

Considering job change due to salary and advancement opportunities

The results show a clear need for better compensation and working conditions. The main reasons for employees considering a job change are:

  • A higher salary (49%)
  • Feeling undervalued by employer (30%)
  • No advancement opportunities (29%)
  • Work environment not pleasant (10%)
  • Feeling stressed at work (10%).

"The hospitality industry needs to take urgent action to improve the appreciation and working conditions of their staff," said Quinyx-CEO Erik Fjellborg. "Offering flexible working hours and better career opportunities can help reduce staff turnover and increase engagement."

Young workers most often consider job change

Younger hospitality workers show a greater willingness to change jobs, with 64 per cent of those aged 18 to 24 indicating this. Among employees over 54 years old, this is significantly less (33%).

Employee engagement increases through higher salary and advancement opportunities

The reasons cited by hospitality workers for quitting their jobs are similar to those if they would actually increase their commitment to their work. 62 per cent indicate that their commitment would be increased with a higher salary, and for 22 per cent this is true if there were better advancement opportunities. In addition, a more flexible work schedule (19%) and a less stressful work environment (23%) increase engagement at work.
