LED lighting: ideal solution for hotels

Cost-saving, flexible and sustainable

Hotels are all about atmosphere. Cosy music, finely decorated rooms and atmospheric lighting. With today's energy prices, it is important to think about costs as well. Moreover, guests are asking more and more: corporate social responsibility is high on the agenda. What solution do you get when you combine these aspects? Exactly, LED lighting. Leo van Aken of Klemko Techniek BV tells all about it.

Many hotels like to work with durable lighting materials that are easy to install. Not only good for the image towards guests, but also cost-saving. After all, hotels are rather big consumers when it comes to energy.

Halogen versus LED

Van Aken says: "Some hotels still work with halogen lamps. These often have only 2,000 burning hours, unlike our LED lamps, which last up to 50,000 hours. Quite a difference, then." Add to that the purchase cost of the halogen bulbs you have to replace each time and you immediately know that LED lighting is a more sustainable and cost-saving option."

Dimming for a moment

You get the most atmosphere if you dim lights. "Especially in hotels where you want to create a cosy, cozy atmosphere," says Van Aken. "So dimmable lighting in rooms and common areas is a good idea anyway. Just for the costs and energy you save with it. But corridors are often still lit day and night 100%. Of course, you want your guests to be able to see where they are walking. Besides, it gives an unsafe feeling to walk along a (semi-)dark hotel corridor. So do you want to create a nice place for your guests and save energy? Then presence detectors with a dimmable output are a good idea."

"There will be dimmed LED lighting in the corridors by default," Van Aken continued. "Hotels can set how much light the lights should give by default. Around the three spotlights is a sensor that detects movement. If you walk past that spot, the light in that area goes on brighter. Once you pass that spot, the light intensity goes back to the standard setting. So guests see where they are walking, they feel safe and you save a lot of energy. Your guests immediately know that, as a hotel, you are doing a good job with energy-efficient materials."

Were those 50,000 hours of LED lighting already music to your ears? "With dimmable lighting and especially presence sensors, you can extend that lifespan even further. Whichever way you look at it, it is always profitable to switch to LED lighting. Especially if you do it smartly. Then you get that boost for corporate social responsibility on top of it."
