Relax moment

Just as they know 'hygge' in Denmark and 'lagom' in Sweden, on the Dalmatian coast they speak of 'fjaka'. There is no literal Dutch translation for this, says Pieter den Hartog, who founded FJAKA Furniture in 2022. "Fjaka mainly describes a feeling, a state of deep peace and relaxation. What it's all about is enjoying the simple things in life, taking a relaxing moment and, in doing so, completely letting go of the everyday hustle and bustle for a while. That attitude to life is what FJAKA Furniture wants to reflect." By the way, the choice of the Dalmatian region is no coincidence. "My wife is from there and she came up with the name. The meaning is right and it sounds good, so we went for it straight away."

Timeless elegance

FJAKA Furniture's debut collection is called Pomalo, also a word originating from the same Dalmatian region. "It means slowing down, relaxing, living in the moment. So this fits perfectly with FJAKA's vision. And also our second collection Laganini, which stands for relax, builds on the same lifestyle," den Hartog points out. The FJAKA furniture pieces exude timeless elegance in a Mediterranean chic style. "They bring a sense of calm and well-being to the outdoor space, with a touch of luxury. This enhances the holiday feeling of hotel guests."

Sustainability

Sustainability is a top priority of FJAKA Furniture. "We make every effort to reduce our carbon footprint. We work with sustainable FSC-certified wood in our products, sourced from controlled forest plantations with strict reforestation protocols. We only work with suppliers who share the same sustainable values and we notice that the sustainable aspect is increasingly decisive for our own customers too," says den Hartog. The brand also exclusively uses recycled cardboard for its packaging. And if paint is used, it is free of toxic substances.

Unique designs

FJAKA Furniture works closely with talented designers to create designs that convey the brand's philosophy. "We are strongly committed to unique designs that fully embody the 'fjaka lifestyle'. We want to be different from other brands," den Hartog says. FJAKA Furniture focuses on project markets such as hotels and restaurants, for which customised designs can also be created.

Growth potential

"Outdoor experiences are becoming increasingly important. People want to enjoy as much comfort and luxury outside as they do inside. With outdoor furniture that is both aesthetic and functional, FJAKA Furniture offers the answer to that demand. We already work together with many great parties in Europe and we still see a lot of growth potential. We are therefore busy developing new collections," he concludes.
